Trucking is the local shipping mode of transporting goods from one place to another within a particular territory. It deals with the processes of conveying items between the supplier to the buyer that share the same territory.

Trucking services are classified into two, Full Truckload (FTL) and Less Than Truckload (LTL). Full truckload, also known as FTL, is a type of shipping mode whereby a truck carries one dedicated shipment for an individual or business while Less than Truckload is the consolidation of various individuals’ items.

Some extra care must be in place to ensure the best transportation of the goods that guarantees safety and prevents damage to the packages and cargo. This is necessary to minimize some risks involving trucking; the following are considered essential tips to foster the right prospecting and in engaging a forwarder.

Things To Note

  1. Equipment: The size of your cargo determines the loading and unloading procedure. For large and heavy packages, equipment such as liftgates, slip sheets, ratchet straps, ramps, forklift, etc is recommended for proper handling. In certain regions, minimum weight applies to the manual lifting of cargo. For some cargo, human labour can be utilized depending on the size and quantity of packages to be loaded, unloaded or moved around.

It is necessary to be aware of the equipment that will be needed in handling your cargo and ensure the availability of this machinery before the arrival of the truck. Equipment handling usually attracts additional charges as most of this equipment are only available for rent at the point of loading and unloading.

  1. Shipment Weight: It is also important to be in alignment with weight regulation to endeavour to know the actual and dimensional weight of your shipment and communicate the same to your forwarder to avoid logistic problems such as additional costs or even short pay in the case of insurance reimbursement should an accident occur.

  2. Forwarder Available Time: Time is most essential in the logistics paradigm, upon this, there must be an agreement with your carrier ensuring that you both agreed on a realistic pickup and delivery time to afford crises most especially for perishable goods. However, every factor such as traffic, delay from regulators etc. must be put into consideration

  3. Load Requirements: Each facility has its specification in terms of weight, coverage capacity, particulars, etc. These are internal issues and a forwarder may not disclose this to their consignees regarding the information supplied by the consignee. It is therefore useful to communicate adequate information about your package to the forwarder. For instance, your package weighs 1.3kg and you communicated 1kg and your forwarder uses a van of 1kg as a carrier based on the information supplied; this will actually generate an issue along the way.

  4. Delivery Note: this is a document that contains delivery instructions such as the receiver’s contact information, specific information on the package and some relevant instructions. As minor as this may sound, it can constitute a long delay thus, be deliberate in giving precise delivery information.
